Nearly a dozen people, including a 5-year-old child, were snatched as they left a polling station on the West Island of Montreal on Monday early evening.

The collision occurred around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Sunshine Academy, an elementary school in Dollard-des-Ormeaux converted into a polling station for the federal elections.

“The driver was coming to vote and she started to accelerate really quickly in the parking lot. She knocked over several people, it was not a beautiful scene to see, ”said a volunteer from the Liberal Party of Canada met on the spot.

A total of nine people were injured, Urgences-santé reported. Three men, three women and a child had to be taken to hospital to treat injuries that would not be life threatening.

Two of the victims would have suffered “more serious injuries,” added Urgences-santé.

Finally, two other people were treated at the scene of the collision by paramedics and their state of health did not require transport to hospital.

According to witnesses, the driver suddenly accelerated on entering the parking lot and lost control of her car while trying to make a turn, then colliding with several people who were at the exit of the polling station.

By mid-evening, the 51-year-old driver was “held for investigation,” Montreal police reported.

A large security perimeter was erected in the area, forcing people who wanted to go and exercise their right to vote to make a small detour in the area.

The polling station was temporarily closed for about 30 minutes following the incident.

A police investigation was opened to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.

Montreal police said it was an “accident” and not a willful act.
