The Canine Support Directorate of the Federal Police presented his dog Zennah on Tuesday, which can detect traces of semen. This is a first in Belgium.
This bitch “manners“, as the federal police call it, can be used to look for traces of semen in the context of an investigation of sexual violence. If the victim does not, for example, remember the precise place where she was raped , the bitch can be deployed to pinpoint the exact spot where the assault occurred, and sperm traces can then be preserved to identify the rapist using DNA.
Zennah can now be used nationwide. The bitch was offered to the federal police by her Dutch counterpart, who has been using morality dogs since 2015. Zennah’s training lasted around five months in Belgium and before that she had already been trained in the Netherlands. A second animal is being trained in Belgium.
According to a 2020 poll by Amnesty International and SOS Viol, one in five women has been a victim of rape and almost half of victims of sexual violence were first exposed to it before the age of 19.
