More than 25,000 students will be on strike Friday in Quebec to participate in a demonstration for the climate during which they will take the opportunity to denounce the third link project in the capital.
This march is part of an international mobilization initiated by the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who made a remarkable visit to Montreal in September 2019.
Thousands of students around the world will demonstrate to demand concrete actions to fight climate change. In the province, a dozen gatherings are planned, including one at Place D’Youville, in Quebec, in the early afternoon.
At Laval University, 14 student associations have adopted a strike mandate for the occasion, as have those of the Cégeps Garneau, Sainte-Foy and Limoilou.
Even those in high school
Young people from high school will also participate in this mobilization, including those from Joseph-François-Perreault school where the administration even invited all its students to participate as a “welcome activity”. In the morning, workshops to make signs and reflect on climate change are planned.
Environmental issues occupy an important place in this school of 660 students, which also took part in a similar march in 2019, explains the director, Marlène Bureau.
“We have a lot of families who are involved and we knew that there were a lot of students who would not be in school that afternoon anyway. This is how we began our reflection on this subject. We think it’s important to get our students to think about our ecological footprint, ”she says.
Antonin Girard, one of the second secondary students, was also designated as one of the spokespersons for the event.
“The issue of climate change is not just a deterioration of our ecosystem. It is the survival of humanity that is at stake. Youth is fighting to save the world, that is why it arouses a lot of interest and enthusiasm, ”says the 13-year-old young man.
Against the third link
The young people who will join him will take the opportunity to oppose the third link project between Quebec and Lévis, he adds.
“We must abolish the third link. The $ 10 billion [de ce projet] could be invested in sustainable development. There, we will promote the car industry once again and with the urban sprawl that this will create, it will totally harm the environment, ”he says.
