On the occasion of the national day of air quality, Eco CO2, promoter of the national school ecomobility program Moby, presents the results of its second barometer carried out by the IFOP 2 Institute concerning “Parents and transport home – school”.
In France, home-school transport represents more than 26 million trips 3 made every day during the school year by students, teachers and school staff. These trips are a source of traffic jams, road insecurity and above all pollution at the time of entry or exit.
In this context, municipalities are starting to pedestrianize or close lanes to traffic around educational establishments. These measures are often linked to the development of low-emission mobility zones (ZFE-m) and the Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) in order to reduce the environmental impact of transport.
Results of the Eco CO2 – IFOP barometer on home-school journeys
The survey reveals that these short and regular trips are levers
keys to deploy active and shared modes of transport, and thus reduce the number of vehicles in circulation and therefore pollution.
Despite the short distances between the school and home, the private car remains the preferred mode of transport (31% of respondents), even if walking is progressing (+ 3% compared to 2020 or 28%).
Among parents who drive their child to school, 26% say they make an exclusive trip for school trips and 17% make a detour from their home-work route. Carpooling remains marginal (1%).
Active mobility, walking and cycling, represents 30% of journeys.
15% of students use buses and 18% school buses. As a possible consequence of a rise in vaccination, there has been a resumption of confidence in public transport compared to last year since parents are less encouraging children to use individual transport. In 2021, 45% of parents recommend the use of individual transport for their child, against 55% in 2020.
39% of students live within 2 km of their establishment and 64% within a radius of 5 km.
60% of parents indicate that their child takes less than 15 minutes to get to his school.
55% of parents are ready to favor active mobility.
This result rises to 65% for parents whose home is located less than 2 km away. This opinion is motivated by health reasons (47%) as well as by ecological reasons (45%). For parents, the benefits of active mobility for children’s health are generally well identified. 80% of them believe that they have a positive impact on the long-term prevention of cardiovascular diseases and on the weight control of the child.
55% of parents expect the public authorities to facilitate the use of active mobility by developing cycle paths or pedestrianization in certain neighborhoods.
While safety constitutes the first criterion for arbitration between the different modes of transport, 59% of parents cite their supposed dangerousness as the main obstacle to the use of active mobility. The bicycle is undoubtedly the expense. It remains in the minority. Like last year, it represents only 2% of the modes of transport chosen while its use is booming among the population.
“This second barometer reveals that the short distances home – school establishment are adapted to the development of active and shared mobility if the security of the surroundings of the establishments is considered sufficient.
