With this double, “Alex The Great” now totals 732 goals in the Bettman circuit.
He is now missing 163 nets to join Wayne Gretzky at the very first rank in history.
Hendrix scores in his 1st game
Quebec striker Hendrix Lapierre will remember October 13, 2021 for a long time.
The first in Hendrix Lapierre’s career!
In his first game in the NHL, Lapierre scored his first professional goal in this emotional evening for the Caps.
The 19-year-old center found himself two-on-one with his line partner TJ Oshie and lodged the puck in the upper half, baffling the vigilance of Alexandar Georgiev.
The Lapierre family was on hand to attend the meeting. The Gatineau resident fell and hit the squad after scoring. Oshie threw up a glove and lifted it up with his bare hand to celebrate the Capitals rookie’s first goal.
“I told him before, ‘You just have to shoot the puck,’” said Ovechkin. “He’s a talented youngster, fun to watch and obviously I hope he has a great future. “
Oshie opened the power play in the first period. Justin Schultz also hit the target on the power play on the second period, 24 seconds before Lapierre’s goal.
Lapierre was all smiles after his parents, grandparents, brother, sister and girlfriend attended his goal.
“For a first game, I don’t think I could have dreamed of better,” said the Quebecer.
Ovechkin made it 4-0 in the third period, scoring from his favorite spot in the power-play face-off circle.
Chris Kreider responded, also on the power play, for the Rangers halfway through the final third. Kreider was the only one to defeat the vigilance of Vitek Vanecek, who made 24 saves.
Ovechkin returned to the charge by scoring his fifth career shorthanded goal with 7:59 remaining on the clock.
Georgiev allowed five goals on 27 shots in goal for Rangers. Igor Shesterkin is expected to be at his post on Thursday at the Rangers’ local opening.
