5G continues to conquer the smartphone market at high speed. According to Strategy Analytics, it is present in nearly half of smartphones sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2021, and this proportion is expected to increase in the fourth quarter of 2021 to favor of the end of year celebrations. Over the year as a whole, more than a third of smartphones sold would be compatible with 5G.
Strategy Analytics bases its figures on tracking the top 500 best-selling smartphone models, accounting for around 93% of total sales by volume worldwide. “Over the past eight quarters, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in 5G smartphone shipments and sales starting in Asia, then North America, then Europe, explains analyst David Kerr on the firm’s blog. The number of 5G models released in our list of the top 500 smartphones on the market has exploded from just 45 in Q1 2020 to over 200 at the end of Q3 2021. During the same period, the share of 5G in total global smartphone shipments rose to almost 50%.»
