Rabat – The Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat, chaired by HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, closed Thursday in Rabat the artistic workshop “I draw my heritage”, with the presentation of 400 honorary certificates to participating schoolchildren and 50 boxes drawing for the benefit of the winning students of the competition.

This initiative, launched on the sidelines of the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites on April 18, aims to educate schoolchildren aged 6 to 12 to the historical values ​​of the city of Rabat through artistic creation and plastic art.

By stimulating their imaginations, 400 schoolchildren expressed their perception of the cultural, architectural and urban heritage of the capital, during a competition organized for the occasion.

Speaking at the ceremony organized in collaboration with the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Morocco), the director of the Regional Academy of Education and Training (AREF) of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Mohamed Aderdour, noted that the Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat is a major partner in the preservation of the historical and civilizational heritage of the city, adding that the launch of this initiative with a strong educational scope goes hand in hand with the Kingdom’s desire to promote the national education system and the Moroccan school.

This project, he said, aims to promote the spirit of citizenship and patriotism among students, given the undeniable role of artistic creativity in the deployment of the Moroccan school.

For his part, the President of ICOMOS Morocco, Abdelati Lahlou, underlined that the initiative aims to make schoolchildren discover, under the guidance of their teachers, the scope and symbolism of the inscription of Rabat on the UNESCO World Heritage List and sensitize them to its Outstanding Universal Value.

In this regard, he indicated that the Kingdom has a rich cultural and human heritage, in particular in terms of historical monuments, which enabled the capital to be inscribed on the list of World Heritage of Humanity.

Indeed, since this registration in 2012, the Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat, under the presidency of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, has been consecrated as a transversal body for the coordination of safeguarding and in heritage value provided for in the management plan, a governance tool for the property inscribed by UNESCO.

The mission of the Foundation is to perpetuate and transmit the historical, architectural, artistic, landscape, material and immaterial values ​​inherent in the cultural heritage of Rabat. To do this, it ensures the monitoring of current and existing projects, promotes synergy between the actors concerned by the safeguard of the heritage and works for the sensitization, the promotion and the evaluation of the state of conservation of the heritage.

An international NGO represented in Morocco, ICOMOS is dedicated to the conservation and protection of monuments, groups and sites of cultural heritage.
