A North Korean student has been sentenced to death for bringing a cope from the Netflix Squid Game series into the country. The young man returned from China with the series on a USB stick, which he first watched with a classmate. He then sold copies to various people including several students. He was arrested by the surveillance services and will be executed in the peloton.

His arrest is said to have taken place in northern Hamgyong province. In North Korea, a law on “Eliminating Reactionary Thought and Culture” provides for a maximum death penalty for viewing, preserving or distributing media from capitalist countries, including South Korea and the United States. The school concerned is still the subject of a thorough search by the authorities, and several teachers have reportedly been punished.
