Sciensano looked at the vaccination status of 105 Belgians who lost their lives as a result of Covid-19 between September 6 and October 17, 2021.

Of the 13 Belgians aged 18 to 54 who were killed by the virus, 12 were unvaccinated. In the 55 to 64 age group, six of the seven patients who died were not vaccinated. Of the 19 patients between 65 and 74 years old, 12 were not vaccinated, and seven were.

Beyond 75 years, in absolute figures, the number of vaccinated patients who died from Covid-19 is higher than that of the unvaccinated. In the age group 75 to 84 years, 27 out of 44 deceased covid patients were well vaccinated, 17 not. In those over 85, 13 of the 22 patients who died had been vaccinated, 9 not.

“It is above all important to compare the number of deceased covid patients and their vaccination status with the rest of Belgians who have been vaccinated or not by age category”, explains virologist Steven Van Gucht in Het Belang van Limburg. “In this way we see for example that people in the age group of 55 to 64 years who have not been vaccinated, are 47 times more likely to succumb to the virus than those who have been vaccinated”.

Anyone who, between 55 and 64 years of age, has received a double dose of a vaccine against Covid-19, has a risk of 1 in a million of dying from Covid-19, while this risk for non -vaccinated is 47 in a million. In the age group between 65 and 74 years, the unvaccinated are 25 times more likely to die. In the 75 to 84 age group, people who have not been immunized are 9.7 times more likely to die. In those over 85, this risk for the unvaccinated is 7.3 higher. The protection of the anti-covid vaccine against death resulting from the virus therefore increases the younger the patient is.

Previous studies also show that vaccinated people are less likely to be infected with the virus and develop a severe form of the disease that requires hospitalization.
