Senegalese international Pape Gueye suspended by Fifa

Senegalese international Pape Gueye has been suspended by Fifa following a dispute over a transfer between his club Marseille (French Ligue 1) and English club Watford (Premier League), the Senegalese coach announced on Friday .

Pape Gueye, 22-year-old striker, currently present at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon with the Lions of Senegal, “had problems outside the national team with Marseille. On a transfer, there were problems between Marseille and Watford. Fifa has suspended him,” Aliou Cissé said in a video seen by AFP on Friday.

“So, as long as we haven’t appealed, he can’t play with us. We actually found out five minutes before the kick-off” of the Senegal Lions’ second match against Guinea Friday in Bafoussam (0-0), said Mr. Cissé.

“This is another problem that has happened to us like so many other problems since the start of this AFCON,” he added.

After several absences due to Covid during its first match on January 11 against Zimbabwe (1-O), Senegal was deprived of several of its players on Friday after numerous positive tests, including defender Kalidou Coulibaly, midfielder of PSG Idrissa Gana Guèye Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The information on the suspension of Pape Gueye “fell this morning around 11:00 am-noon. The menagar team (of the team) had the informaion from his lawyer who told us be careful: do not make him play “.

“We have to pray for (Pope Gueye) to recover for the whole (rest of the) tournament. It’s not yet easy,” continued Aliou Cissé.

Senegal will play their last group game against Malawi on the third day. The Lions and the national Sily of Guinea are almost qualified in the round of 16.

Senegal, although diminished by notable absences, has not yet assumed the status of favorite that many observers attribute to him, he who is chasing his first CAN after two lost finals, in 2002 and during the previous edition in 2019.

Before joining Olympique de Marseille in 2021, Pape Gueye had first signed a pre-contract with Watford.

Born in France, he played with the U18s and U19s of France before opting for Senegal, his parents’ country of origin, in October 2021. He signed his first professional contract in Le Havre in 2017.
