The health pass becomes compulsory from Saturday to access his workplace in Luxembourg, in accordance with a law passed in December after the appearance of the Omicron variant.

The Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, had pointed the finger at a vaccination rate “too low to avoid overloading hospitals“, at a time when information on the high contagiousness of Omicron raised fears again of strong pressure on the healthcare system.

On the reaction side, the bosses are getting organized. This is the case of Claude Olinger, director of human resources at Post Luxembourg, the largest employer in the country. “We have set up the possibility for our employees to put themselves on a list. Any vaccinated or recovered employee can register. It will then no longer be controlled. Any employee who is not listed will be checked daily when they come to work.”

On the worker side, the measure is sometimes considered excessive. “We are still a lot to be vaccinated. The cases are not so high in Luxembourg. At worst, there are alternative measures, such as teleworking.

Others are quite satisfied. “It’s great, it allows us to come back. It’s rather good news since almost everyone is vaccinated.”

In the Grand Duchy, 65% of the total population is fully vaccinated – a lower figure than in France or Belgium -, and 42% have received the “booster” or booster dose, according to official figures.

From Saturday, employees who do not telework must be able to show proof of a full vaccination schedule, recovery from Covid-19 or antigen test within 24 hours (48 hours for PCR).

The obligation concerns both the public sector and private companies.

The employee who does not present a health pass cannot however be dismissed. The refractory employee or the impossibility of presenting a pass will have to go on leave or give up his salary when his leave is exhausted, specify the authorities.

Luxembourg, a small state of 630,000 inhabitants wedged between Germany, Belgium and France, has regularly broken contamination records in recent weeks, with around 30% of positive tests in recent days. With 20 people in intensive care out of a total of 69 Covid patients treated in hospital, the healthcare system is not currently congested.
