“There is a drop in immunity over time and we are starting to see it in several regions: there are starting to be outbreaks again in the accommodation centers”, Patricia McKinnon, director of vaccination at the CIUSSS de the Capitale-Nationale.

It is precisely a recent outbreak at the CHSLD Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, in the Saint-Sauveur district, which prompted the CIUSSS to advance the inoculation of the 3e dose in the elderly.
Although no deaths have been deplored so far, 11 people – including nine users – have contracted the virus in the establishment since October 8.
“When the virus enters a shelter where customers are more vulnerable, it can [faire des ravages]. That’s why it’s important to get the third dose for this clientele, ”explains Ms. McKinnon.
Priority to the most numerous
As of Friday and during the next week, 4,150 users in 29 CHSLDs will be visited by CIUSSS workers to receive their third dose.
Moderna’s vaccine was selected for this additional injection, which will allow everyone to have at least two identical doses.
The most populous establishments, namely the CHSLD Yvonne-Sylvain, Saint-Antoine and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, as well as the General Hospital of Quebec, will be the first to be visited. The CHSLD Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes will also be in the lead, but it will be necessary to wait for the end of the outbreak.
For seniors in private residences in the Capitale-Nationale, it will be necessary to wait until October 20. It is also at this time that the CISSS de Chaudière-Appalaches will follow suit for the 3rd dose vaccination for its 34 CHSLDs.
South of the river, we will take the opportunity to inoculate the influenza vaccine at the same time.
On the Capitale-Nationale side, only people aged 65 and over will be able to benefit from this double vaccination on Friday.
But this is only a matter of supply, says Patricia McKinnon. The others will only have to wait a few more days in order to be protected against the flu in their turn.
The minimum time between the 2e and the 3e dose is five months, which is why some settings will benefit from the additional injection of the COVID-19 vaccine before others.
