A pair of sneakers worn by American basketball star Michael Jordan is auctioned for a record $ 1.47 million (FCFA 828,317,620).

Jordan wore the pair of red and white Nike Air Ships in his first season with the Chicago Bulls in 1984.

This is the year he started collaborating with Nike to create his brand of clothing and footwear.

To read especially on BBC Africa:

The price is the highest ever paid for a shoe worn in a match, all sports combined.

Jordan is considered by many to be the best player in basketball history.

The full-back, who spent most of his career with the Chicago Bulls, has become a global icon and has helped raise awareness of the NBA around the world.

Jordan, who retired in 2003, also became the first billionaire player in NBA history.

“This record breaking result for the Jordan Nike Air Ships confirms the place of Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan franchise at the top of the sneaker market,” said Brahm Wachter of Sotheby’s after Sunday’s auction in Las Vegas.

The autographed sneakers are purchased by Nick Fiorella, a renowned collector.

Prior to the sale, their price was estimated to be between $ 1 million and $ 1.5 million.

They are not, however, the most expensive sneakers ever sold. This record belongs to rapper Kanye West, whose Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototypes fetched $ 1.8 million (FCFA 1,014,266,500) in a private sale in April.

The all-time high for sneakers has been broken several times in recent years, and the market is now attracting interest from general buyers as well as major collectors.
